Charles Babbage (1791-1871), a computer pioneer, designed the first automatic computing engines. He invented them on paper but never actually built them. The first complete Babbage Engine was built in London in 2002, 153 years after it was originally designed by the Science Museum in London to prove it would work. Difference Engine No. 2 was built faithfully to the original drawings, consisting of 8,000 parts, weighing five tons, and measuring 11 feet long.
